Filezilla is a free open source file transfer protocol (FTP) package that comes with a wide range of features.
While the use of FTP is not as prevalent as it was decades ago, an FTP utility is still useful at times and in certain situations. Filezilla remains one of the best of these utilities. It was once even named the Project of the Month at SourceForge. CNET also gave the software its highest rating.
It should be noted, though, while the software comes with a client package for MacOS (as well as packages for Windows and Linux), the server package is available for Windows only.
On the client side, the software comes with the following features:
- The use of encrypted FTP protocols, such as FTPS and SFTP
- IPv6 upport
- Support for pausing and resuming transfers
- Processing of multiple transfers (to and from multiple servers) at the same time
- Server bookmarks
- File transfer queues
- Drag-and-drop interface
- Directory comparisons that highlight any differences found
- Throttling of transfer speeds
- Application of filename filters
- Wizard for managing network connections
- Editing of files on remote servers
- Remote file searching
- Support for keep-alive commands
- Support for HTTP/1.1, FTP-Proxy and SOCKS5
- Logging support
- Support for synchronized browsing
- Support for files greater than 4 GB
- Secure password storage
- Support for 47 languages
